On Christmas eve, being insanely jealous over my daughter’ s iTouch, I had the urge to send Santa a text. (Does Santa do SMS?) Alas, it looks as if I may regain my early adopter status in the family. Santa Steve Jobs is set to deliver next week. Apple’s announcement is just in the nick of time. I’m frustrated with my Blackberry, my laptop is old and slow and my Kindle is really pretty limited.

If the Apple tablet is what I think it is, I am literally going to do a jig (and part with about $1,000.)

Ok, Santa Steve, here’s my tablet wish list:

  • Let me download books (and newspapers and magazines).
  • Give me the great readability of Kindle text, with the option to have a backlight for night reading. (God, I feel like such a geek using a WORM light with my Kindle.)
  • Let me annotate the text in a fully searchable Word doc. Ok, sure, if I can use other applications and get internet access too, even better.
  • Give me not only the touch screen capability, but some sort of pointer device AND arrow keys. I’m always looking for arrow keys on my Kindle. I might also want the option for connecting a mouse.
  • Give me the book’s cover in full color graphics. I want to look at the cover now and again. I just do.
  • Coorrelate the pages to the real book pages. I want to know that I’m on page 45 of 200, not that I’m 15% finished.
  • Let me “browse” through the book. I want to click from the table of contents and go right to that chapter. Gosh, better yet, I want to be able to “flip” through the book on the screen. If Santa Steve gives me that, I might just buy a MacBook too.
  • Of course, let me text message.
  • Sure, ok, let me use it as a speaker phone.
  • Music? ok, sure, why not? This isn’t high on my list. I’m more of a book worm than a music wonk anyway.

I can’t wait until next week’s announcement. I can’t wait to get my fingers on the iTablet.

Paper, beware! I think you’re going down.

I don’t know if paper should beware (or, that I want it to beware… some things are better in “old school” print), but I agree with all of your tablet dreams. Looking forward to Wednesday!

Aren’t you lucky? It’s $500 less than you thought.
